Action at Harma

Byr engaged the autopilot to land his badly damaged Anaconda at the station. Despite the smell of burning circuitry and a sea of red status lights that lit up the whole bridge, that at least still checked out 100%. Failing thrusters sputtered and strained to guide the great vessel through the docking slot.
Byr swung the keyboard of his Anaconda’s helm into place as the ship was lowered into the repair bay. The green glow of the comms panel illuminated his face in the darkness of the repair bay, where his ragged ship was patched together once again. The second shift had started before Byr began typing the encrypted message to Templar High command. It had been an audacious plan: strike at Harmon, the capital world of Pirate King and blockade Gabriel Station until ordered to withdraw.
It had not come without cost.
“EYES ONLY UNDER PENALTY OF TREASON
START OF TRANSMISSION
Master Templar Noast,
Blockade of Gabriel Station Action Report:
It is my duty to report the results of actions in Harma and the blockade of Gabriel Station.
16 Archon Delaine ships destroyed, many more damaged or crippled, including heavy combat ships and blockade runners.
Templar losses acceptable.
Mission Objectives Achieved
Gun camera recordings to be shipped by fast picket at earliest opportunity.
Byr Goefin, 2nd Squadron Commander, White Templar.
Commander, White Templar Anaconda Class “Unbearable Lightness of Being”
END OF TRANSMISSION
EYES ONLY UNDER PENALTY OF TREASON”
Simple words those were, “Templar losses acceptable”, but they weighted heavily on his mind. It meant men, Templar, Sergent and Squire alike that would not be returning from the action at Gabriel Station.
Later, at the Mission Rendezvous Station he was intercepted by his friend and mentor, John Koteki.
A seasoned veteran of the order, he had trained some of those lost today. He had not joined them in the action, but had been on a secret mission of his own. Even as a Squadron Commander Byr had not given all the details of the dangerous mission that had been undertaken by an elite wing of Templars.
John slapped him on the should in a friendly and supportive gesture. “Don’t be so hard on yourself lad. From all reports you did the best you could, and nothing more could have been said or done.”
“Still, they were my responsibility.”
“I know Byr, but that is burden of leadership. A poor leader would have had no remorse over the losses. Remember and honor the sacrifice those of us who fall in battle, but never be discouraged. We all know the price of law and order in the galaxy.”
With just a few words, John had given him a lot to think about during the long journey to the Templar Homeworld.
